Taylor Alvarado selected player of the match in Mexico’s first pool play game vs. New Zealand

Eagles U-18 players Taylor Alvarado and Jessica Valadez are in Azerbaijan for the U-17 World Cup

Fernanda Perez scored the winning goal as Mexico began their Group C campaign with three points after beating New Zealand 1-0 at the Bayil Stadium in Baku. This was a great accomplishment for Mexico who have Brazil and Japan in their group where the top two will advance to the quarter-finals.

Taylor had an exceptional game and had a few scoring opportunities and because of this the TV announcers recognized her as the player of the game. Jessica Valadez did not play in the game due to a hamstring injury she suffered while preparing in Holland.

Later in the evening, the team was rewarded with a Jennifer Lopez concert. J Lo had performed at the World Cup opening ceremonies the previous night and was in concert tonight. The game was televised live nationally by the two biggest TV networks in Mexico (Televisa and TV Azteca) and it was streamed live by ESPN 3 in the USA. Games and replays of all games will be shown on ESPN 3. Their next game will be played Wednesday at 5:00 am vs. Brazil.
